Stop Marking VDP Views as Conversions

It's January 5, 2026, and some dealerships are already collecting bad Google Analytics data.
We're less than a week into the new year, and we're already seeing stores repeat the same GA4 mistakes that cost many of them accurate reporting throughout 2025.
The screenshot below is from a new dealer group setup where vehicle detail page views (VDPs) were being marked as Key Events. In GA4, a Key Event is simply Google's term for a conversion.
Starting 2026 with a clean Google Analytics setup means you can trust that your data is being collected correctly from day one.
So why exactly is marking asc_item_pageview (VDP views) as a conversion a mistake? The reasoning is simple: VDPs matter, but they aren't conversions.
When dealers mark VDP views as conversions, campaigns driving traffic to those pages often show conversion rates north of 100%. A 150% conversion rate isn't a win, it's a red flag, since it just means every ad click landed on a VDP, and every click got counted as a "conversion" by default.
Which campaigns tend to send shoppers directly to VDPs, rather than other pages on the site?
Vehicle Listing Ads (VLAs), also called Vehicle Ads, part of Performance Max
Paid Facebook/Instagram carousel ads for new, used, or CPO inventory
VIN-based marketing platforms such as Lotlinx or iHeartMedia's Xvin
Third-party retargeting from providers like Edmunds, Cars Commerce, or Autotrader
When VDPs are counted as conversions in GA4, it becomes nearly impossible to measure what's actually driving results from these campaigns.
The takeaway: if everything counts as a conversion, nothing really does.
Our recommendation heading into 2026 is to track only true conversions, calls, forms, and chats, and leave VDP views out of that equation entirely.
Setting up GA4 correctly, following ASC guidelines, saves headaches down the road and ensures your reporting actually reflects how your marketing is performing.
