Google Analytics is rolling out a dedicated GA4 channel for measuring incoming AI assistant traffic.
If you've ever wondered how many car shoppers are clicking through to your website from ChatGPT, Gemini, or Claude, you could technically piece this together using a Source/Medium report, but the channel groupings were always inconsistent.
That's changing. GA4 now has a dedicated channel specifically for this kind of traffic.
Google is introducing a new AI Assistant channel inside your Default Channel Group reports. Traffic from recognized AI assistants will automatically be tagged as:
Medium: ai-assistant
Channel: AI Assistant
Campaign: (ai-assistant)
Here's the catch — across the thousands of GA4 accounts we manage at Generations Digital, we haven't been able to spot it in the wild yet. It's become a bit of an obsession for our team this week.
More and more shoppers are starting their car search by asking an AI chatbot questions like "What's the best used truck under $40,000?" or "Find me a Chevy dealer near Chattanooga."
If your inventory pages, specials, or service content are showing up in those AI-generated answers, that traffic can now be credited properly, instead of getting lumped into Referral, Organic, or Unassigned traffic (see the screenshot below).
Give it a try yourself. Log into GA4, pull up your Default Channel Group report, and see if the AI Assistant channel is showing up yet for your account.
AI's influence on the car buying journey is real, and for the first time, we have a dedicated way to start measuring it.
