Performance Max Is a Black Box — And Your Dealership Is Paying for It

Performance Max is a black box, and dealers are unknowingly paying the price for it.
Dealers often assume they're spending $2,000 a month on VLAs — or $8,000 a month for larger stores. Once we dig deeper, they realize most of that budget is actually going toward Display or Discover traffic, not VLAs at all.
In many cases, agencies end up buying truckloads of Display traffic under the umbrella of Performance Max, often without realizing it.
We pulled the Google Analytics screenshot below from a dealership account this past week. It's far from an isolated case — this pattern shows up in nearly every new account we audit.
The exception tends to be a handful of top automotive agencies who track the same metrics we do.
Vehicle Listing Ads (a component of Performance Max) are supposed to work a specific way: postage-stamp thumbnail ads appearing in Google Search, shown to in-market shoppers, linking directly to the vehicle detail page (VDP). That's the entire point of a VLA.
Instead, for this particular store, most of that traffic was landing on new car search results pages, or even the homepage. Dig further, and the traffic turns out to be flowing through Display, Gmail, and Discover placements — not Google Search, and not a true VLA.
Here's the core issue with Performance Max: Google markets it as "smart."
We'd describe it more like a vending machine that doesn't show you what's inside until after you've already paid.
There's no granular control, and no real transparency. If your agency isn't actively digging into the data, you won't even know something's off.
VLAs landing on search results pages instead of VDPs. Display inventory quietly eating into your budget instead of Search. If your store is running Pmax, here's the question worth asking your agency:
Request a breakdown of channel versus landing page for your VLA traffic. If Display or Discover is dominating that mix, it's time for a conversation about campaign structure. In a properly configured setup, VLA traffic should map to the Search channel, landing on VDP pages.
