It's official — Looker Studio is now Data Studio again.

For anyone who's been in the analytics world a while, this one brings a bit of déjà vu.

Here's a quick rundown of how Google's free reporting and visualization tool got its name (back):

  • Google Data Studio — Launched in 2016 as part of Google's analytics suite

  • Looker Studio — Rebranded in 2022 after Google's acquisition of Looker, folded under the Looker umbrella with plans to stay that way

  • Data Studio — Announced again on April 10, 2026, bringing things full circle

So what's Google's reasoning this time around?

The plan is for Looker to remain the enterprise-level business intelligence (BI) platform, while Data Studio serves as the go-to tool for personal data exploration, ad-hoc reporting, and quick visualizations across Google's broader ecosystem, including BigQuery, Sheets, and Google Ads.

For automotive dealers, vendors, and agencies, this change doesn't affect your day-to-day work. Existing reports, data sources, and dashboards carry over automatically, with nothing to rebuild or reconfigure.

The detail that actually caught our attention first? A shiny new favicon, which is really what prompted this post in the first place.

What's your take on the rename?
