Is your dealership tracking inbound AI search traffic?

The screenshot below, pulled from our Google Analytics and Looker Studio reporting, tells an interesting story for one of our customers.

This dealership is seeing consistent, and growing, inbound traffic from ChatGPT and other AI models. When we looked closer at the landing pages, their bad credit financing page stood out as a major driver of that traffic.

That's not a coincidence. It signals this dealership is well-indexed by AI search engines specifically for bad credit financing solutions.

Some refer to this as GEO (generative engine optimization), others call it AI-SEO, and some just stick with SEO. The label matters less than the underlying concept: structure your content so it's easily discoverable for your most important search queries.

AI tools like ChatGPT are steadily becoming a primary research tool for car buyers. When someone asks something like "where can I get a car loan with bad credit near me," these AI models are actively recommending dealerships, and this kind of data shows you exactly which of your pages are being surfaced in those responses.

Three action items worth considering:

  1. You need Google Analytics to see this in the first place. Most dealers aren't looking at their AI referral traffic simply because they don't know where to find it inside GA. If you're not reviewing this monthly, you're likely missing a meaningful growth channel.

  2. Landing page analysis reveals your AI positioning. Whichever pages are receiving AI-driven traffic tell you what topics and solutions AI models currently consider you authoritative on. Our Analytics Express reporting (shown here) surfaces this clearly in Looker Studio, though the underlying data lives in your Google Analytics account, you just need to know how to segment and track it properly.

  3. This is an active optimization opportunity. If your dealership isn't showing up in AI-generated results for key services, now's the time to adjust your content strategy, ideally before your competitors catch on.

The dealerships that come out ahead going forward will be the ones who understand they're no longer optimizing purely for Google. They're optimizing for how AI models interpret and recommend their inventory and services.

Organic Google search traffic still significantly outweighs AI-driven traffic today, but forward-thinking dealers are already adjusting their website content to get ahead of this shift.

Is your dealership tracking AI search traffic yet? If not, it's worth digging into your Google Analytics account, or leaning on reporting like ours that combines GA4, Google Ads, Google Business Profile, and third-party sources (Autotrader, Cars.com, and others) into one clear view.
